PIXE Analysis of Bone Cut with Hacksaw Blades

چکیده

Forensic anthropologists use various methods to determine the type of weapons used in cases involving a dismembered body. For this study PIXE (particle-induced x-ray emission) analysis was performed on samples taken from pieces of pig bone cut with three different hacksaw blades. The analysis was used to determine if the blades left any elemental residue on the bone. When the results of the PIXE analysis were completed, lead was identified as a residue left from the paint on the blades. It was also found that the ceramic blade, which was used to collect a portion of the samples, left elemental residue. There were also some interesting changes in other elements such as copper in various samples.

Man or machine? An experimental study of prehospital emergency amputation

OBJECTIVE Prehospital emergency amputation is a rare procedure, which may be necessary to free a time-critical patient from entrapment. This study aimed to evaluate four techniques of cadaveric lower limb prehospital emergency amputation. METHOD A guillotine amputation of the distal femur was undertaken in fresh frozen self-donated cadavers. A prehospital doctor conducted a surgical amputatio...

Snap-on-handles for a non-powered hacksaw: an ergonomics evaluation, redesign and testing.

Based on the ergonomics evaluation of existing non-powered hacksaws with original/horizontal and conventional/market handles, ergonomically designed hacksaw handles are proposed. To accommodate the entire male and female populations, the hand dimensions are categorized into three groups: small, medium and large. The proposed handles give special emphasis to hand size, length, cross-section dime...

Assessment of reprocessed arthroscopic shaver blades.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of contaminants on, as well as the quality of, reprocessed shaver blades. METHODS We assessed 7 new shaver blades and 27 shaver blades that had been reprocessed with mechanical cleaning, functional testing, and sterilization with ethylene oxide. A spectrophotometer measured the amount of nucleic acid and protein. The blade quality wa...

Design and Analysis of Bionic Cutting Blades Using Finite Element Method

Praying mantis is one of the most efficient predators in insect world, which has a pair of powerful tools, two sharp and strong forelegs. Its femur and tibia are both armed with a double row of strong spines along their posterior edges which can firmly grasp the prey, when the femur and tibia fold on each other in capturing. These spines are so sharp that they can easily and quickly cut into th...

Design and Test Research on Cutting Blade of Corn Harvester Based on Bionic Principle

Existing corn harvester cutting blades have problems associated with large cutting resistance, high energy consumption, and poor cut quality. Using bionics principles, a bionic blade was designed by extracting the cutting tooth profile curve of the B. horsfieldi palate. Using a double-blade cutting device testing system, a single stalk cutting performance contrast test for corn stalks obtained ...
